Pues creo que es el primer post en el que publico un disco estrictamente POP, pero es que "This year´s model" es uno de los discos más brillantes, redondos, divertidos y brillantes del género en mi opinión.
Este pedazo de obra maestra fue publicada en 1978 y fue el primer lp de Costello con esa maravillosa banda de acompañamiento suya llamada The Attractions.
Una de las cosas curiosas de Costello, es que en los 70 era una persona que llevaba una vida totalmente normal, casado y con un hijo, era una persona que de vez en cuando enviaba maquetas de sus temas aquí y allá, pero sin hacerle tampoco demasiado caso al tan ansiado sueño de la fama, hasta que un día Jack Riviera de Stiff Records no se podía creer lo que estaba oyendo, tal colección de temazos brillantemente compuestos e interpretados hicieron que automáticamente fichase a Costello, el resto es historia.
"This year´s model" es su segundo álbum y para mi, el mejor de todos si hablamos de su época más pop. Conocidos son los flirteos de Costello con diferentes estilos y agrupaciones, tales como Brodsky Quartet (otro disco increíble), en el que adaptó sus temas a una formación de música de cámara, con unos resultados mucho más que notables. Ahora a Costello le acompaña una banda de música folk irlandesa y la jugada también le ha salido redonda.
Cuando escuchas "This year´s model" puedes pensar perfectamente que es un álbum recopilatorio de los grandes éxitos de Costello pero no es así, hablamos de alguien tan sobrado de talento a la hora de componer que se puede permitir el lujo de sacar algo como esto, un disco en el que no sobra ni un sólo tema, un disco en el que todo encaja, un disco que disfrutas desde que empieza hasta que acaba, y que no baja el nivel de calidad en ningún momento.
En 1978, todo estaba cambiando, los grandes dinosaurios de la década estaban empezando a entrar en un irremediable letargo, la música demandaba otra revolución en la que todo fuera divertido, en la que cualquiera podía ser una estrella del rock, una música con la que te pudieras sentir identificado, alejada de esos dioses intocables que eran Led Zeppelin, por poner un ejemplo.
"This year´s model" se podría encuadrar en eso que se denominó New Wave, aunque para mí, trasciende épocas, trasciende sub-géneros y pienso que es una obra capital e imprescindibilísima para entender la historia de la música pop.
