Tyrannosaurus Rex se llamaba el dúo folk que tenían el guitarrista y cantante Marc Bolan y el percusionista Steve Peregrine Took. Editaron cuatro álbumes acústicos a fines de los '60, con relativo éxito, hasta que Peregrine se fue y Bolan, en 1970, decidió acortar el nombre del grupo a T-Rex y cambiar abruptamente su sonido.
Editó el álbum homónimo y fue un suceso inmediato.
La banda se completó con Mickey Finn en la percusión, Steve Currie en el bajo y Bill Legend en la batería. Los dos singles siguientes (Hot love y Get it on) y el album Electric warrior (1971) desataron el llamado "T-Rextacy" en Gran Bretaña: el glam rock estaba en marcha. La imagen de Marc Bolan -maquillado, con boas de plumas, botas de plataforma y lentejuelas- se hizo tan famosa como su música.

Rex (originalmente llamada Tyrannosaurus Rex) fue una banda de rock inglesa fundada en Londres en los años 60 que tuvo éxito como grupo de Glam Rock en los años 70.La banda fue fundada por Marc Bolan en 1967 y tocó sólo una vez como un quinteto en The Roundhouse antes de separarse. Posteriormente quedó reducida a dúo con Marc Bolan y Steve Took, editando tres álbumes producidos por Tony Visconti. El sonido era una especie de Folk Rock de una tierra imaginaria, con guitarras acústicas y montones de diferentes y exóticas percusiones. Las letras remitían a seres extraños, elfos, hadas, magos y duendes. Tuvieron una notable aceptación entre los hippies londinenses de finales de los sesenta. En esta época fueron muy apoyados por el famoso periodista musical John Peel. Pero el auténtico deseo de Marc Bolan era ser una verdadera estrella y, tras una decepcionante gira por EE. UU., despidió a Steve y reclutó a un nuevo percusionista, Mickey Finn, con quien grabó un cuarto álbum aún bajo el nombre de Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Con el álbum T. Rex, de 1970, la banda no solo acortó definitivamente su nombre, sino que se pasó a los instrumentos eléctricos. A partir de entonces obtuvieron sus mayores éxitos comerciales, pero algunos consideran más interesante la música de su primera época acústica.
La banda acabó sus días cuando Marc Bolan murió en un accidente de tráfico en 1977, sin haber cumplido los 30 años.
