La historia del grupo comienza en los años 80 en la ciudad de Venecia, ubicada al suroeste de California, Estados Unidos.
La primera formación del grupo estaba compuestas por: Mike Muir en voz, Louiche Mayorga en el bajo, Grent Estes en la guitarra, y por último Amery Smith en la batería.
Comienzan haciendo temas hardcore-punk. Para este época solo eran una banda más, hasta que finalmente, en el año 83 llega su primer disco de Suicidal Tendencies. Se convirtió en el disco mas vendido de la escena underground del punk y del metal de los años 80. Como consecuencia lograron que Frontier Records editara su CD. La producción y el arte de tapa del mismo, estuvo a cargo de Glen Friedman.
Empezaron a presentar el material en varias ciudades de los Estados Unidos. Su single “Institutionalized” apareció en el film de Emilio Estévez “Repo Man”. El video de cuya canción fue uno de los primeros del estilo hardcore punk en la cadena televisiva Mtv.
Su público seguía creciendo, y más allá de esto, permanecían teniendo continuos problemas por sus letras, razón por la que estuvieron censurados. Tuvieron que cambiarle el nombre a la canción “I shot Regan” (yo le disparé a Regan) por “I shot the devil” (yo le disparé al diablo). Se cree que por dicho revuelo el disco logro obtener mas éxito del esperado.
En el año 84 Mike Muir fundó “Suicidal Records”, y produjeron bandas como “Beowulf” “Uncle slam” “Excel” y “No Mercy”. Al año siguiente salió un compilado con todos estos grupos, el cual se llamo “Welcome to Venice”. Dicho material incluía un tema inédito “Look up… the boys are back”
Ya para el Segundo disco del grupo, las cosas no iban del todo bien. Habían sufrido algunos cambios. Grant Estes, el guitarrista sería reemplazado por George Rocky, y el bajista Amery Smith sería sustituido por Ralph Herrera.
Ya en el 87, luego de tres años de transición, grabaron “Join the army”. Fue editado por Carolina Records y producido por Lester Claypool.
Algunos de los temas que sonaron fueron: “Possessed to skate” 2two wrongs don’t make a right (but they make me feel a whole lot better)” “Suicidal Maniac” y “I feel your pain”.
Ya como para estos tiempos compartían escenarios con D.R.I, Agnostic front y Gang Green.
Sus dos primeros discos se mantuvieron en el punk acelerado, y fueron referencia para el mundo del skate.
La temática del grupo abordaba temas como: la incomunicación, conflicto generacional, aislamiento, confusión. Estos temas son los que contenían la filosofía punk de películas como Repo man.
